Carrying a gun can provide both safety and danger. It gives security since it can protect you against intruders who may force their way inside your home or vehicle, but it can also be dangerous if the intruders snatch or steal the gun and use it as a weapon against you. The perilous situation usually happens when owners have no security devices or items in their vehicle that can prevent their gun from being stolen.
Without any form of security in their vehicle, gun owners would often store their firearm inside the glovebox or in the console box, but hiding a gun is not enough to prevent wrongdoers from stealing it, as these compartments usually don’t have locks or passwords to open.
To alleviate this problem, several manufacturers have created safety boxes specifically made to store or hide firearms and other valuable items in different places of the vehicle. Listed below are some of the more popular types of gun safes for cars and trucks.
Besides having a regular console box, you can upgrade it to have a hidden compartment at the bottom known as the console safe.
The manufacturer Lock’er Down has several console safes that can fit in different brands and models of vehicles. Their popular safes are for the 2014 to 2020 Toyota Tundra, the 2013 to 2017 Dodge Ram Pickups with CD player, and the 2014 1500 Series Sierra/Silverado.
The console safes made by Lock’er Down is built using 12-gauge cold-rolled steel that is durable enough to prevent intruders from prying it open or slashing and stabbing it to make a hole. The console safe has a four-digit combination lock that ensures that you and the others who know the code are the only ones who can access it.
Besides hiding a pistol or a small firearm, you can also store other valuables such as phones or wallets in the safe. If ever you need to charge your phone, there is a built-in USB port in the compartment so that you can have access to your device without inputting the combination for the door.
Other than Lock’er Down, a company called Tuffy also builds console safes, but the ones that they usually make have locks that can be opened by keys instead of combinations. Their most well-known Tuffy safes are for the 2015 to Current Ford F-150 and the 2014 to Current Toyota Tundra.
To conceal the location of your vehicle safe even further, you can the ROCCS Secret Compartment Cover that is effective in making your console appear to have only one compartment. However, the only model that ROCCS is currently offering online is for the 1500 Series Sierra/Silverado.
You can also put gun safes for handguns inside the glovebox, but these safes are relatively farther away from the driver seat compared to the console safe since gloveboxes are located in front of the passenger seat.
One of the excellent glovebox safes available in the market is the SereneLife SLSFCR22, which has a manual key lock and pre-drilled anchor holes and screws to bolt it inside the glovebox. Besides a vehicle, this pistol safe can also be mounted underneath tables or on the walls of your home.
If you don’t want a keyed lock, there is another variant of the pistol safe called the SLSFCR21 that has a three-digit combination lock.
Safes Underneath the Seat
Another excellent option for having safes in the vehicle is by installing them underneath the driver or the passenger seat.
As previously mentioned, intruders may already know to search in the glovebox or the console for valuables, but some of them may not even bother looking underneath the seats, especially if they are in a hurry. Because of this, having the safe undera seat may be the safest option for storing your firearm as they would most likely go unnoticed in that location.
There are several safes in the market that can be placed at the bottom of car seats, and one of the better products is the Bestop Lock Box, which is available for 2007 to 2018 Wrangler JKs. If you have a smaller space for safes, you can buy a personal lockbox like The Club LB200 that has a braided steel cable to tie the safe on a seat mount.
For rifles, you can get the Tuffy 316-01 Lock Box that can be installed under the rear seats of 2015 to Current Ford F-150s or other vehicles with the same dimensions. Take note that some longer rifles, specifically the ones that are 15 inches or more in length, may not be able to fit in the Tuffy lockbox.
It is strongly advised that guns should not be left in vehicles, but there can be times wherein you cannot carry a firearm in specific locations, leaving you with no choice but to store the gun in the truck or car. During these instances, it is recommended that your vehicle has a gun safe to ensure that your firearm will not be stolen or lost.
